YELLOW CROWNED BREEDERS HERNANDO & BAM BAM
Pictured at left and below is our breeding pair of Yellow Crowned Amazons, Hernando and Bam Bam. Yellow Crowned Amazons - Amazona ochrocephala ochrocephala - are also frequently referred to as Yellow Fronted Amazons. Either term is correct. Yellow Crowns are generally knows to be less temperamental or aggressive and as a rule, a bit more laid back than some of the other species of Amazons such as the Double Yellow Heads, Yellow Napes or Blue Fronts. Yellow Crowns are also known to have very good talking ability.

Breeding season here generally begins in late December and lasts through May or June. In 2006, we decided a break and rest from breeding and raising babies would benefit not only Bam and Hernando, but we humans as well. We did not set the pair up with a nest box for breeding allowing them time to rest, rejuvenate, play and just have fun without the worry or work of taking care of the kids.

All of our babies are DNA sexed at a very early age. They are lovingly hand fed, abundance weaned, well socialized and allowed to fully fledge. Once babies have mastered the art of flying, cornering and landing, we administer a minor wing clip which allows them to continue to fly a short distance and still land properly while at the same time assuring their safety by slowing them down a bit and limiting the height they would be able to obtain without clipped wings. The flight feathers grow back in with their first molt and it is then up to the new owner to decide whether or not they prefer the bird be clipped or fully flighted. In most instances, we recommend a proper wing clip which still allows the bird safe albeit limited flight.

We will be more than happy to add your name to our waiting list for babies hatching in 2008 however, you must be able to pick up your baby here in NE Indiana. Once the eggs hatch and we have live babies, we accept non-refundable deposits to hold the baby of your choice until he or she is fully weaned. We do not sell unweaned babies.

Huey is fond of asking "What are you lookin' at? Are you lookin' at me? I SEE you! I see you lookin'!"
